Following Yourself?

There are so few great leaders that most people are just following themselves. Yet, in a culture full of problems and individuals that glorify radical personal autonomy, people long more than ever for good leadership. We have many managers, those with the ability to organize and skillfully handle resources, but leaders do much more than that. They facilitate radical change, something sorely needed in churches, businesses, the government, and individual families. They take people to heights of accomplishment and success they thought impossible.

True leaders are magnetic. Through their wisdom, example, and force of personality, leaders attract followers, altering their thinking and actions. Simply put, leadership is the ability to influence other people.

Born to Lead?

So where do we find these leaders that we need? Rarely, individuals are endowed with natural leadership talents. There are “born leaders” who pursue their passion as they mature their capabilities through study and application. But for most of us, leadership skill is a learned art. If you are very fortunate, you may have a leadership mentor that teaches and models how to guide, direct and influence people. The rest of us must slog through leadership books and attend leadership courses to learn the enduring wisdom gleaned from the experiences and insights of those that have gone before. Like an athlete, we must study the basics, earnestly practice, and apply discipline to become the leaders we desire to be.

Even that is not easy, because there is more garbage than gems out there. Shysters promote magic formulas, instant results and easy shortcuts that do not exist.

Learning Through Proverbs

But what if experienced leaders condensed the knowledge contained in thousands of leadership books into potent principles? What if they crafted these principles into sayings, which were succinct, forceful, to the point and often spiced with an element of wit? What you would have would be the book, Leadership Proverbs, a resource unlike any other that, like a diamond focusing light, cuts through the verbosity of many resources and provides a treasure-trove of guidance gems.

The pithy sayings in this book communicate truths most memorably. Their brevity and clarity facilitate their usage for would-be leaders in every walk of life— teachers, pastors, business people, students, politicians, doctors, fathers, and mothers. Experienced leaders will use them to remind themselves of core principles and to teach others. Neophytes will read and remember them as axioms to guide their development.
Proverbs are not only an enduring form of communication; they are one of the most viral. They are easily memorized. They change behavior and enhance skills. They are readily passed on to others. They are the germs of an infectious leadership movement.

The Greatest Leader That Ever Lived

At the same time, remember to be a really great leader, you must follow the greatest leader that ever lived, Jesus Christ. He will give you insight showing you where to apply these principles and the discipline to adhere to them. Our prayer is that God will use this resource to shape your mind and heart into the leader He designed you to be.

You may be learning leadership, hoping to influence people in the years ahead, or have decades of experience with shelves full of leadership books –literally a forest of knowledge. In Leadership Proverbs, we have gone into that forest, tapped the richest trees and boiled down the sweet sap. That essence was then packaged into bite-size sayings you can easily internalize.
