David Stevens, MD, MA (Ethics)
Dr. David Stevens, co-author of Leadership Proverbs, serves as Chief Executive Officer of the Christian Medical & Dental Associations (CMDA), a national organization working with over 30,000 Christian doctors and students on over 220 medical and dental school campuses. CMDA's vision to transform doctor's lives and through them their patients. CMDA mobilizes, trains and equips both short-term and career medical missionaries, as well as serves as the voice of Christian doctors on bioethical and public policy issues to the church, government, media and culture.

Dr. Stevens is a proven leader. From 1981-1991 he provided leadership at Tenwek Hospital to grow it from a small bush hospital in Kenya to one of the premier medical missionary facilities in the world. He conceptualized and led a community health and development programs that today has radically changed the health status for over one million Kenyans. He started a nursing and laboratory training schools, led Tenwek to be the first computerized mission hospital in African, and using local labor and volunteers built a dam and 320 KW hydroelectric project to power the hospital.

He subsequently became the medical director for Samaritan’s Purse where he empowered hundreds of mission hospitals around the world and started the organization’s medical relief ministry. He recruited, trained and led medical relief teams into Somalia where they provided life sustaining care to 45,000 Somali’s in the midst of war and famine. Under very difficult conditions in the midst of a civil war, his medical team wiped out an epidemic of relapsing fever in Sudan. His staff opened the first hospital in Kigalia, Rwanda in the midst of the genocide.

After being appointed as CEO in 1994, he led a renaissance of CMDA’s ministry so tha it was selected as a Best Christian Workplace in the USA by Christianity Today and the Christian Leadership Alliance in 2003.


Dr. Stevens holds degrees from Asbury College and the University of Louisville School of Medicine and is board certified in family practice. He earned a master’s degree in bioethics from Trinity International University in 2002 and serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Asbury College and on the board of World Gospel Mission.

Dr. Stevens is married. He and his wife, Jody have three grown children that work in inner-city Memphis with Christ Community Health. Dr. Stevens is also the author of Jesus, M.D. - A Physician Examines the Great Physician
